Super G-Man Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]
Developed by Mike Clark and published by Codemasters in 1987.
The objective of the game is to guide G-Man across 10 horizontally scrolling level in order to complete the game. The only objective on each stage is to locate the exit, which looks just like a caravan.
Since the game is set in space, there is reduced gravity and you have to use your jet-pack to avoid traps, enemies and to move from platform to platform. The jet-pack has a (very) limited amount of fuel, so it's imperative that you collect the bonus fuel containers throughout the stage.
To complicate things, there are numerous enemies that appear in the form of projectile-firing pits in the ground, as well as weird aliens in the air. If you collect ammo containers then it's possible to destroy these, but it's also possible to destroy ammo/fuel containers by accident.
You have an unlimited number of lives, but each death will cause the level timer to decrease by a considerable amount; if the timer runs out then the game is over.
I remember this game being extremely tough and playing it again today for this video was no different. Enemy spawn positions, the gravity/inertia and fuel mechanisms all conspire to make the game impossible to complete. The real kicker comes from the fact that you can actually fly past the level exit, which means you've got to go through the whole level again! The level timer isn't long enough to do this, so if you miss the exit then it's game over.
An added complication is the weird control scheme; to thrust upwards, you have to press back on the joystick instead of up. You only have to worry about speed and thrusting since you can only move to the right, but it seems silly that this control scheme was imposed.
Not a terrible game, just too damn hard.
