Full game longplay of Shadow Man 2econd Coming, a PS2 exclusive released in March 2002, sequel to the much beloved Shadow Man game. The only longplay of the game on the whole of internet! I'm glad to be the first one to hopefully bring this forgotten game back to the front of people's minds, especially as there is a Shadow Man Remastered coming out on PC on 15th April, a week after this movie is published! Played on a hacked PS3 slim, through PS2 Classics emulation software. Real widescreen, deinterlaced, and with PS3's edge antialiasing for more of a clean, less pixelated look. Note: Audio delay in cutscenes is connected to the emulation and the echo in the middle of the longplay is a bug(?). Plain/messed up textures in Ireland areas are a bug too, not connected to the emulation in this case. :)

Quick synopsis of the story: The game starts off as a New York cop and his partner fight a huge demonic creature in an abandoned building. Their goal is to steal an enormous ancient book because it couldn't be put in the wrong hands, in this case the demons hands. The cop successfully grabs it and escapes the building but his partner gets shredded into pieces by the demons claws.
Some ten years later a near empty passenger train is headed to New Orleans. Mostly alone sits Michael LeRoi waiting for night to fall when he shall turn into The Shadowman. Nettie was waiting for him at her church but she felt something wrong. She looked at the sky and saw a blazing star and knew it meant trouble.

So here it is, the (in)famous sequel to the beloved Shadow Man, which notably caused the devs to close down just two months from the release. Reviews were pretty okay, showing a solid game, but nothing extraordinary. Unfortunately that didn't go along with the sales, not even the marketing stunts with caskets and graves helped the title. It remained an obscure PS2 exclusive. Devs followed a radically different character design this time, not for the better, oh no. Mike LeRoi was the biggest victim. A buffed up guy during the day, and a skeleton during the night. Earlier it was a normal build black guy with floating shirt and sunglasses, and a true voodoo warrior, with the Mask of Shadows clearly on his chest, and with a human face and demonical, glowing blue eyes. My absolutely biggest complaint of the game, is the horrible controls.
Mike is very unresponsive, latency is of the charts, and I vene got additional "ping" so to speak due to recording the game with latency-adding recording hardware! It was an absolute nightmare! With that out of the way, the game is still built of hubs, and to unlock new entries you have to turn the switches, push the buttons, and gather Sigils (as opposed to the Dark Souls in SM 1) primarily. Locations just somehow feel... flat compared to the first game. Huge, creepy Asylum, London Underground, Deadside, Prison... All fantastic and well done.
But in Shadow Man 2, there is a feeling the game is somehow... limited due to the hardware. Framerate is bad, real bad. Hitting 30 fps is a bit of a miracle (note: PS3 emulation could have made it worse a bit). And the levels I feel were made smaller, more... closed. Not unlike Thief Deadly Shadows. First 2 Thief games had obscenely huge levels, while Thief DS had tiny areas with long loadings in-between. Shadow Man 2econd Coming just feels very small in scale, and maybe even in budget too? When you link horrible controls and a lot of time-based jumps and acrobatics, that's when shit hits the fan the hardest. My gamepad flew through my room like 5-6 times overall, and always on the acrobatics sections. Phew.
But... I still do like the characters, especially Mike, the steroids didn't change him much. Bosses were pretty okay, if not a bit chessy, but at least they don't regenerate health as long as you don't restart the game, lol. I'm not sure how I would have fared if Shadow Man hadn't been actually immortal, and could just reappear in the middle of the boss fight again and again, with full health and magic. :)

Overall, Shadow Man 2econd Coming unfortunately doesn't live up to it's predecess, in difficulty level maybe yes, but it just falls flat. A few desing changes here and there, and it could have been another classic together with the first Shadow Man.
Rating? 7,5/10. Enjoyable, when the game doesn't annoy you with controls and design choices. And that is a bit too common for my taste.
