What is the deal with this game! You pick up a book, you die. You go in a door, you die. You climb a ledge, you die. Your light goes out, you die. Hell, you probably eat your lunch, you die. Die die die die die die .... and die. Get used to seeing the grim reaper smile at you cause you'll see him a lot. I could not imagine buying this at the tender age of seven when it first came out and being tormented by endless deaths. I also couldn't see beating this before the age of the internet very little coverage other than possibly a clue or two in the latest Nintendo Power. All you had was time, trial and error, and your friends at break in the schoolyard to muscle through this game with.
You play as the last in a line of king-warriors that must defeat an evil warlock before he summons a balro...erm, behemoth. To accomplish this you put together a staff using the most vague clues on this planet and do it without succumbing to the thirty aught ways to die. It's not a task for the weak of patience.
Despite the steep difficulty, it is a really fun game to play. The music is decent enough, the graphics are pretty average for NES and the point and click attributes of it are better than most others of the genre released for the system. At least the controls and screen layout make for easy navigation.
You could make a drinking game out of it. Every time you die in the game you take a shot, but be careful cause you'll be taking so many shots you might ending up really dead...which may be what this game was setting out to do all along.
