Addams Family Values
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Developer: Ocean Software, 1994
Publisher: Ocean of America, 1994

Remember the movie Addams Family Values? It starred amazing character actor Raul Julia and a young Christine Ricci. The movie took you on a mystical journey though swamps, deserts, wetlands and ice fields where the humble Uncle Fester fought spiders, and eyeballs, bushes and ghosts, oh my. All these perils to save a gentle baby with a mustache. Sounds like a great movie huh? Oh wait, that's the game and it makes no damn sense.
A game with ties to the movie in name only it seems, you play as Fester who has to rescue baby Pubert (awful name) in an overhead Zelda style game. This is only mildly amusing though as this game is nearly impossible without a walkthrough....or I should say it would be agonizing without one since no one drops clues as to where you should go, the maps are obtuse, and the game is so vague in its orders that you have a better time understanding the Navier-Stokes equations than figuring out what to do next in this turd. The controls are stiff, the story's dumb, the enemies are mostly boring, and the game just overall leaves you feeling grey.
Why is there only one place, at the far end of the world, where you can "save" your game to get a 28-letter password? Why must Fester only be able to hit things on the same side as his attacking hand? and why doesn't anyone say anything about what to do or where to go next? My gawd!
The game isn't all bad though. The humor is dark and the soundtrack is pleasant and fits the mood of the game. if you were too poor or hate elves and never played Zelda....then you may like this game, but having been spoiled by a series that gets it all right, to then go to this game that only gets it...partly right sometimes...it makes you feel hollow when you play it.
