After being cancelled and shelved for more than 20 years, this long lost game is finally out at long last. Welcome to Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution.
This game began development for the Game Boy Advance in 2002. It was planned to be the second entry in the series. However it was cancelled in 2004, due to WayFoward unable to find a publisher. It wouldn't be until 2023 where development would resume. Surprisingly they would find a publisher, courtesy of Limited Run games. The game was given a physical GBA release in April 2025 and the game would be ported to all modern systems with a release day of well... today.
Now that this game is finally real, this game is the second entry of the series set inbetween the first Shantae game and the third, Risky's Revenge. It centers on the half-genie Shantae who must now travel all over Sequin Land in order to stop her nemesis Risky Boots. This time around, Risky is using a subterranean device to shift Sequin Land so that she can rob and plunder at her leisure. To stop her, Shantae must seek out three geologists hoping to put an end to Risky's plans.
The game plays just like the first game as she must travel all over Sequin Land to stop Risky Boots. As she does, she travels to various areas, obtaining new transformations and finding anything that can give her the advantage. You collect jewels that will net you money and you use that to get new items and upgrades for Shantae. Not to mention that there are also Secret Squids. There are 50 in all and you need to find them all to get the best ending. It's going to be a lot of work to say the least.
In the first part, we cover the beginning where we beat Risky Boots in an easy boss fight. After that we head for the Mining Town only to find more trouble. We then get a map for Orc Orchard and then explore the area until we tackle the first dungeon: the Bramble Maze Labyrinth. We get our first dance, the Monkey and take down Mishmash. We also return to Mining Town and trade a game cartridge for a Heart Holder so our health goes up.
