Shenmue 2 begins when Ryo arrives in Hong Kong in order to locate Master Lishao Tao as he was instructed to do by his friend and confidant, Master Chen, at the end of the first game. This mysterious and elusive individual is Ryo's only possible link to Lan Di, the Chinese man who murdered his father Iwao. Ryo is also searching for Yuanda Zhu, a martial arts expert who sent Iwao a letter warning of his impending murder, a warning that arrived too late.

The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of US$47 to $70 million, though some of the development also covered Shenmue II. Despite attracting positive reviews and a cult following, the games were commercial failures.

Shenmue was developed by Sega AM2 and AM R&D Dept. #2. Shenmue is Published by Sega.

The games were ported with the help of British studio d3t. Shenmue I & II were released on August 21, 2018.
