2Shining Force - a classic series! Still considered to be some of the finest tactical RPGs of the era, the first two Shining Force games on the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) have a huge fanbase. It was time I played one of them! If you've played a tactical RPG before, you know what to expect here. Move units on a map in a "strategic" manner, and attack the opposing units when you're in range. Some units can attack from a distance, others have to be adjacent to the enemy. What's different about SF, although some other games now also use this feature, is that instead of just watching your units attack from the same overworld map, the perspective changes and you watch your units fight from close. It's purely aesthetic. But it's so pretty! Let me just say that I was blown away by the number of different backgrounds presented throughout the game. It kept changing all the time, depending on our location, and it really made the battles more fun to watch! The game has a strange grinding mechanism, however, where you can start a battle and warp back to the nearest village to heal up after you've gained experience points. You can rinse and repeat as often as you want. I avoided doing this, but sometimes I did die and thus had leveled up that way. When your units hit level 10, they can change classes to become more powerful - but they'll revert back to level 1. It won't take long for them to surpass the previous strength they had, however, and at a much lower level. Class changes are also required if you want to equip stronger weapons found later in the game. One tedious aspect is inventory management. Characters can only hold four items/weapons at a time, so you always have to swap things around between characters. There are secret missable characters, too, so that's a thing. But you'll have so many at one point anyway that you'll have a hard time choosing who you want to bring into battle. The music was OK. It can also be a difficult game if you don't know what you're doing, or it can be super easy if you cheese it with classes and levels. Overall, I had a lot of fun with Shining Force, and I will definitely play the sequel in the near future!
