Secret of Evermore - Part 4/6 - SNES ~ Caverns & Mazes
Welcome to Secret of Mana! Uh... I mean... Secret of Evermore! Clearly based off of Seiken Densetsu II, or Secret of Mana in English, Secret of Evermore is an action-RPG made by the North American Squaresoft team. As a result, the game very much feels like an "Americanized" RPG. You play the entire game as a boy from the fictional but very U.S.y town of Podunk, who gets sent to different worlds and tries to get rid of the evils lying within. The only party member you'll ever get is your faithful companion, a dog, who transforms into different breeds depending on your location. Since the game is a carbon copy of Secret of Mana, it also suffers from the same pitfalls. You have to charge every single attack every single time. This slows the game down considerably. Run about while charging, hit, run, hit, run, hit... I'm not a fan of this system at all, and I wasn't a fan of it in Secret of Mana neither. If you die, you're also sent back straight to the title screen, so save often! The problem is that some dungeons can be quite lengthy, so dying against a boss can be heartbreaking, requiring you to redo over half an hour of gameplay. There are also a significant number of ridiculously complex mazes that are in fact so long that even while using a guide I was afraid to get lost. I found the game to be tedious for these reasons, and that's without mentioning game-breaking glitches that can force you to reset or even restart the game from the very beginning in worst case scenarios. There's not much music, either, the game often opting for ambient sounds instead. Some RPGs have aged better than others, and I'm not sure Secret of Evermore is part of the former. In this case, I think save states would have helped reduce the frustration and make the experience more fun.
