Just like the previous Shinobi runs, this one too, is melee only.
And this game, also does outstay it's welcome a bit but it never gets as tedious as the second game. Shinobi III: Return of the NiNjA Master is a legit great game, though it still has elements of extreme cheapness that can make it frustrating.
It has the best soundtrack in the series as far as I'm concerned, and the controls are soo good. It isn't Kaze Kiri good but, few games can compare to that one honestly. But it is a most excellent and smooth experience. The final boss however.. I'd like him a lot more if it felt like you could have a more fair fight and not have to bait a lot of his moves.
But he was really fun to fight.
