When similar-looking samurai media releases within the same time frame, it can be hard to remember what goes where in terms of actual history. Shogun debuted on FX just a few weeks before the release of Rise of the Ronin, leading to such a situation.

This short should clear things up. Shogun is set more than 200 years before Rise of the Ronin, so the two things take place at vastly different cultural and historical times. This also leads into Japan’s Meiji Era, where video games like The Great Ace Attorney take place.

The 10-episode adaptation of Shogun is available to watch on FX, and Rise of the Ronin is playable on PlayStation 5. It’s the latest offering from Team Ninja, the same developer behind Nioh, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
