Tommy John surgery has become an epidemic in baseball and although the science behind the operation has resulted in many pitchers being able to extend their careers, the new argument has resulted in discrepancy post surgery. Matt Harvey of the New York Mets was set to a 180 IP limit for the 2015 season, but the arbitrariness of how many pitches are thrown per inning (compared to how many innings pitched) has caused concern for the organization as they make a push for the playoffs. The 2012 Nationals team shut down Stephen Strasburg and ended up losing in the NLDS. It begs the question, should pitchers be shut down?
