Peter Schmeichel rocked Manchester United in the 1998-99 season by announcing that he would leave the club at the end of the season. The season in question happened to be the fabled treble season where Schmeichel’s final game came as captain in the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich. Schmeichel finished his career at Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa and Manchester City whilst Manchester United failed to find an adequate replacement until Edwin van der Sar in 2005.
