In Outriders, players can customize four characters, each of whom has its own unique abilities. These characters can be used in various ways, such as using the Pyromancer, the Devastator, and the Technomancer. Each class has its own unique set of skills that can be used with various effects.
Various weapons can be used to defeat enemies, such as shotguns and assault rifles. Players can also customize their firearms with weapon mods. As the game's world level increases, it is more likely that the player will obtain high-end loot from defeating enemies.
As the player explore various hub areas, they can interact with other non-playable characters and take on various side missions. The game can be completed solo or with two other players.
Earth has reached the point of no return due to climate disasters that are becoming more frequent and dangerous. To preserve humanity on Enoch, the governments of Earth join forces under the ECA. Two massive colony ships are constructed to house 500 thousand colonists. Despite an explosion in the middle of their construction, the Flores manages to reach its orbit after an 83 year journey.
After being awakened from cryogenic sleep, the Outrider learns that the ECA's failed colonization has left them with no more advanced technology than they had before. They are then pitted against the Insurgents, who seek to overthrow the ECA. The Outrider reunites with Shira, who is now the ECA's leader.
Dr. Zahedi and Shira then explain that they are trying to find the source of a mysterious signal that originated from the other side of the Anomaly. Zahedi has the last satellite uplink that can connect to the Flores. If the settlers can successfully relocate to a safe area, they can establish a new colony.
Upon entering the Caravel, they discover that the people who left Earth built it with a more advanced engine, which allowed it to reach Enoch before the rest of the world. The Caravel colonists then encounter a race called the Pax, who are a peaceful race. They also keep the Anomaly in check by using their own powers.
As the cargo pods land, they encounter a group of humans who are inspired by the Outrider's story.

Ben Davis from GameRevolution gave it a 7/10, criticizing the story and the characters, but also praising the gameplay and level design. He also noted that Outriders is a "blast from a simpler past".
Reviewers commended the game's combination of cover shooting, co-op, and tactical combat. The Telegraph's Tom Bradwell said it captured the "exactly what makes a genre tick", while also criticizing its use of sci-fi cliches.
