In Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, new blood Sledgehammer Games adds to the Call of Duty formula futuristic tech, Kevin Spacey and on-trend exo suits, with which we get to grips in Show of the Week.

As a premise to give you new powers from mission to mission, the exo suits keep things interesting. Each mission in the single-player campaign equips you with a different loadout for your robotic exoskeleton, so in some you will be scale walls with magnetic gloves, others see you double jumping and hovering, and others let you zip around the battlefield with a wrist-mounted grappling hook.

Advanced Warfare is full of the bombastic set pieces for which Call of Duty is famed, but the game's directors, Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, are the creators of Dead Space, and you occasionally sense their taste for horror when Advanced Warfare dials back the gung-ho action.

One mission, for instance, set in a dark ruined school in Detroit, has a whiff of survival horror about it. In another mission, you use actual stealth to infiltrate a heavily guarded compound. It's not groundbreaking stuff, but it is refreshing to play a Call of Duty that mixes up the pacing; it can't be jumping robokicks all the time.

In addition to the campaign, and the series' trademark multiplayer, Advanced Warfare includes co-op mode exo survival in which your team of future soldiers takes on waves of enemies while tackling objectives. How long will Jane and I survive between the distractions of exo high-fiving each other and writing on the wall with lasers?
