Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams | Xbox | Widescreen hack | Longplay Story Mode* Full Game Walkthrough
Full game longplay of Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, also known as Silent Hill 2 Director's Cut , the Xbox port of it. This specific version was released on the Xbox in December, 2001. It includes the Born from a Wish story (Xbox version of it was already uploaded on my channel), and some minor enhancements towards the original, like the option to use a 2D type control (opposite to tank controls), and to disable the Noise filter from the get-go. (which I gladly used, YT hates it)
*Do note that I must have started the game on Normal both action and puzzles wise, but then I loaded in some other, ancient save, on which the difficulty was something like Easy or even Beginner, and didn't catch on later during saving, I definitely had the passing thought the game should have been more difficult, especially during the Pyramidhead fights (XD) but I let it slide, as it's like my third ever run, and first I've actually finished. FORGIVE ME, IT DEFINITELY WAS TOO EASY. DO TREAT THIS LONGPLAY AS THE STORY MODE WALKTHROUGH, WITH NO DIFFICULT FIGHTS OR ANYTHING, SORRY. XD
PORTAL ANALYSIS: Overall, this specific Xbox port is in some ways inferior to the PS2 original, and in some ways better. First things first, the game runs at 480p, unlike the 480i on the Sony console. The game can be hacked on the modded console to run in an anamorphic widescreen, filling your screen completely. Looks neat on modern LCDs. And so can the PS2 version, hacked I mean, both though do not offer widescreen on the get go. Secondly, any loadings, saving, is much faster on the Xbox due to the wonders of the HDD installed. The game overall runs a bit better framerate wise, and with less stutter on the Xbox. Noise filter can be disabled immediately, so there is that. Quite a big disappointment in it's time was the messed up dynamic fog system, which produces much less than in the original, actually interfering with the "feel", and "look" of the game according to many. It's the single most important thing that is meaningfully worse in the Xbox port. As a plus, Xbox employs the pixel shaders, and so the flashlight emits much more realistic light, less blocky, and more "natural". For me especially, the typical "xbox" look wins, much more clean, with more clarity, since the PS2 employs the same old bad "no antialiasing and no mip-mapping" look as in almost every game on it.
While not focusing on the characters and plot threads of the first Silent Hill game, Silent Hill 2 takes place in the series' namesake town, located in Maine. Silent Hill 2 is set in another area of the town, and explores some of Silent Hill's backstory. The town draws upon the psyche of its visitors and ultimately forms alternative versions of the town, which differ depending on the character. The concept behind the town was "a small, rural town in America"; to make the setting more realistic, some buildings and rooms lack furnishings.
Some of the more apparent themes that appear throughout the narrative include grief, guilt, and punishment. Seen during the game is James' guilty consciousness manifest in the forms of the enemies the player engages with, the puzzles they must solve to proceed, as well as the symbolism within them. A primary example of this manifestation of guilt is "Pyramid Head," a tall, masculine, faceless, humanoid figure, whose head is concealed by a large pyramid-shaped helmet that is made of rusted iron. Pyramid Head also wields a large blade titled the "Great Knife" that it heaves across the floor in almost all player encounters. Its design not only serves to psychologically frighten the player, as the sharp edges of the triangular head were intentionally illustrated to "suggest the possibility of pain" as explained by Masahiro Ito, but it is also emblematic of many of the themes related to the narrative, as it represents the guilt that James experienced, the retribution he seeks for his actions, and the sexual frustration that he felt while his late wife, Mary, was terminally ill.
