Silpheed - The Lost Planet (PS2)
Heh, another shmup but with one key difference: this one is by Treasure (better known for Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga).
Despite this, I don't think much of Silpheed. It is a typically slow shmup; shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, avoid, shoot, shoot, shoot. There isn't a whole lot that makes it different from the competition either. You do pick what weapons you can use and even unlock new ones to play with later on but they're all rather uninspired. Finally, the game has a lifebar rather than lives. While I can say this makes the game easier in some ways it is more frustrating on later levels as when you die you have to start from scratch.
Ultimately the only saving grace to Silpheed is the aesthetic design, which for a 2001 Playstation 2 release, is incredible to say the least. Yet being a single player, run-of-the-mill, shooter the game features little else of worthwhile attention. Silpheed The Lost Planet can be found for less than £5 now but I'd avoid this one.
