Fighting Vipers (Saturn)
And where Virtua Fighter was Sega's realistic approach to fighting games, Fighting Vipers was their off-beat, yet strangely even more obscure, one-on-one brawler on Sega Saturn.
The controls are literally the same as Virtrua Fighter. Fighting Vipers is a three button fighter, with an empathsis on timing and precision. What makes it different although is the addition of an area to impose your attacks upon and charged attacks which can send an unsuspecting foe to his imminent doom. It can also tear away at their armour which is displayed on the top left of the screen which supposedly makes them more vulnerable to attacks.
What I like about Fighting Vipers is literally how I described it. This game is an abolustely kooky fighter - not necessarily to the level of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure on Capcom CPS3 but close. After completing the game a number of times you unlock a giant bear as a playable character and the Japanese version even has Pepsi-Man as a secret unlockable due to some *cough* subtle product placement in the game. That was removed in the western versions curiously.
Graphically, although Fighting Vipers doesn't run in high resolution like Virtua Fighter 2 it has highly detailed stages and characters, flawless animation and it actually runs faster than the arcade version at 60 frames per second. I also find Fighting Vipers to have memorable music, especially on Bahn's stage and naturally I'm quite a fan of it's familiar gameplay.
All in all, I applaud you to invest in Fighting Vipers. It can be found for less than £10 through online sites, maybe a little more searching is necessary in your local stores but the game is much worth the time and consideration.
