Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 269. Hag Rock Redoubt and Dead Crone Rock
Today our hunt for Stones of Barenziah takes us to the westernmost point in all of Skyrim. We're off to the mountain valley just south of Markarth that contains both Hag Rock Redoubt and Dead Crone Rock. It's a pretty out-of-the-way location, considering no main road leads there. Instead we have to travel to Dushnikh Yal and take a barely marked trail west that eventually comes to the bridge over the Karth River that demarcates the valley. Along the way we have no less than two vampire encounters, just like our Sunderstone Gorge excursion a couple of videos ago, so I guess it's Vampire Month in Skyrim or something.
Arriving at the bridge there's a cute Easter egg. There are three goats at the bridge (although a bear has killed one already in this instance) and a dead troll underneath - a nod to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Our goal here - besides recovering the Stone - is to explore everything on the other side of the bridge. To make things easier we leave Serana at the bridge and go into stealth mode so we can take out all the Forsworn who are outside. This will also kill time until daybreak when exploring the rest of the area will be a lot easier.
A dozen or so Forsworn silently get their throats slit and we pacify the area. From there we make sure and collect every item, harvestable ingredient, and mineable ore in the valley. We even spend some time mountain goating our way around the tops of the mountains on the edge of the valley. We know there's very little chance we'll actually find anything up there, but it's personally gratifying and one of my favorite things to do in the game. We get some really nice vistas overlooking the Reach, especially after using the Clear Skies shout to make it a nice, sunny day.
When all that is complete it's time to turn our attention to the two interior areas. First we visit Hag Rock Redoubt, a rather short Nordic ruin infested with Forsworn, and make short work of it. In the final room I initially intended to do the old "kill the Briarheart by pickpocketing his heart" trick, but got impatient and accidentally forward rolled into him.
Next up is Dead Crone Rock, which is pretty similar. The object here is to make it to the top which then opens to the outside again, where both the word wall and the Stone can be found. I also forgot that this location is one of the targets for the Pieces of the Past quest, so we pick up the first part of Mehrunes' Razor here as well from a Hagraven named Drascua.
With Stone and other goodies in hand we return to Whiterun to finish with a sort n' sell. Next time we have our last freestanding Stone location, and hopefully a courier will be visiting us shortly as well.
