One of the largest cities in the Reach, the border town of Karthwasten acts as a major center for trade along the borders of Skyrim and Hammerfell, welcoming merchants from all quarters, as well as providing easy access to the trade routes of the Karth River, which provides the city with a connection to Markarth and Haafingar further up north. Once belonging to the Redguards of Hammerfell, Karthwasten still shows a number of signs of its recent conquest by the Nords during the War of Bend'r Mahk, a mere 30 years ago. Burned out ruins and crumbled walls offer a startling clash alongside the more opulent wealth of the city's wealthy merchant quarter. And where there's wealth, there's thieves, with a thriving Thieves Guild, who some say have connections to the underground Redguard resistance movement, the Sogat Dur Gada. Either way, there's a lot to do in Karthwasten, and the city is more than worth a visit.
