"SLAM" by Rafer | Geometry Dash 2.11
710Recently, I realized that I never uploaded any of the entries to my past Gauntlet Contests as separate videos, and I figured I could upload some on days where there aren't any cool, new levels to showcase. Some of them still hold up very well, so it's cool to look back at them now. "SLAM" by Rafer got 1st place in the Monster Gauntlet Contest, which was 5 years ago already. Time flies.
Looking over the entries to the contest, I still think this deserved 1st place to this day. Rafer used his iconic design style which he started perfecting around this time, using somewhat chaotic block designs and decorations that are organized enough to look good together nonetheless. He strikes a great balance in that sense. The color mixing, including player colors, and fast color pulses also add to the chaos. With how I've explained his style on display in this level, you'd think the gameplay would be hard to read, but it's the opposite; this is one of most sightreadable and fun levels to play at this difficulty. This is proof of what I just mentioned about Rafer striking the perfect balance between order and chaos. Despite the visuals seeming chaotic, it's organized just enough to not harm the gameplay whatsoever. The clear outlines on blocks and obstacles, as well as arrows as indicators, also help a lot in this regard.
If you remember this contest, you'd know that the main rule was to make a bossfight. The bossfight is perhaps the only thing I'd say hasn't aged that well in this level. You can see the first phase at 0:40, while the second phase is seen at 2:03. Now, I say it hasn't aged that well, but I'm only really talking about the design of the boss itself. Looking at "The Tempest", you'll see a much better boss design by Rafer. This one is just very static, which is due to its design allowing for limited moving parts. However, despite the boss itself being static, the bossfight overall isn't. There are many cool and varied attacks, and none of them are frustrating to play against due to good indicators. This, combined with the fact that it has 2 phases, something few of the entries did, is what made it win. To this day, it's one of the only levels with a bossfight that I can beat in 1 attempt every time and have lots of fun.
