The premise of Slap Happy Rhythm Busters is weird, to say the least. Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, aside from having this wacky title, on its core is a 2D fighting game with 3D manga-shaded characters. The end result is very good, and looks exactly like Viewtiful Joe. But there is more. The word "rhythm" in the title has to have a meaning, right? And it does have. At the heat of a fight, if your Special Bar is completely full, you can perform a Beat Combo. It is basically like if Beatmania for some crazy reason, were implemented in a fighting game. By performing a Beat Combo, you will have to rhythmically press in turn one of the four frontal buttons of the directional pad, according to the beat. And it is amazing to see this in a fighting game.

But to a game that relies so much in music, most of the tunes in Slap Happy Rhythm Busters sound all the same. Techno and New Age abound in the game, and while the audio samples do not sound particularly bad, it is not my cup of tea, either. The sound effects, however, are very good. The sound of kicks, punches and screams combined with the crazy tunes really make you feel like you are in a crazy trip.

The gameplay is fairly good. The mechanics are very similar to those found in the Street Fighter series. Except for the Combos, of course. A funny extra in the game is that if you finish the last round of a fight with a Beat Combo, a "Fever" animation will play, usually showing the characters in ridiculous situations. The game has a lot to be done and a lot to unlock. There are twenty one characters in total, but if you count that as Marcantile you can play either as an old man or as a wolf, you have twenty two characters in the game (besides some other couples, like Vivian and Roxy and Chad and Gram, but you always fight as only one of them).
