The final boss of all of Dark Souls (probably), and a final encounter with an embodiment of the Dark Soul itself. This fight took me more than 2 tries (which is rare for me), though I did have a few tries in there where the boss had less than 200 HP.

Overall this fight is all about getting a feel for the flow and keeping Gael under control. As such, this fight is a very good example of what a Souls boss should be: An encounter where you observe a boss that seems to be overwhelmingly powerful, but by learning his moves and keeping calm, you dodge his attacks and strike him when he leaves an opening.

Gael has a ton of health and 3 phases, beginning at 100%, 66%, and somewhere around less than 40%
In each phase his attacks become more severe and he adopts new moves.

In his first phase (which in my opinion is one of the harder parts of the fight), he likes circling you and jumping around, before closing in quickly and delivering combo-attacks and jump-attacks. He has a few attacks in this phase that have a similar tell to them, but vastly different combo-potential and follow-throughs, making this phase a bit less predictable than his other two phases.

In phase two he uses his Avelyn-style repeating crossbow that fires a barrage of bolts/arrows, and an empowered version of a miracle that shoots light-disks that fly out and then return.
He also empowers himself so that whenever he strikes, his cape flutters along with his movements and creates a mist of blood steeped in the Dark Soul, which deals damage.
Because of this, each swing of his sword creates a sort of after-hit that can deal more damage. This makes the dodge-timing a bit harder, though the after-hits dont really do that much damage, so you can tank some of them without having to immediately heal.
Overall this phase is more predictable than his first one, as long as you stay close to him.

In his third phase he will sometimes scream and erupt a shower of bloody dregs, steeped in the Dark Soul, that fly after you, but are easy to avoid. He will also attract lightning strikes. The locations of the lightning strikes can be seen beforehand, so dodging is not too hard.

Apart from this, his third phase is mostly the same as his second, but with a slightly higher difficulty.

The best way to deal with him in phase 2 and 3 is to wait for him to start a combo, perfectly dodgeroll all of his hits (which becomes easier the more you do it), and then strike him once or twice before he starts his next combo. You can also sometimes get a stagger on him which allows you to get an extra hit in. Rinse and repeat.

This strategy can be interrupted by having to heal, but Gael does not give you many opportunities to heal, and has ways of closing the distance between you very quickly. Also, the time between combos does not always allow time for healing.
