Slightly Magic speed walkthrough for ZX Spectrum
9Since the only full walkthrough for Slightly Magic on ZX Spectrum is on Google Videos, which is about to go down, I decided to make my own walkthrough to show how to get through the whole game and collect all 28 stars safely. But as I wanted to get it all in one video this time and I'm limited to 15 minutes, I had to learn to speedrun it. Eventually I got so good that I had a couple of minutes left over to listen to music!
You only get two slots for inventory in this version, so you really need to plan where you leave objects for when you need them later instead of a "take all" approach. Therefore the game has to ask you whether you want to drop or use a transformation spell when you select it. This is also the reason Slightly drops the invisibility spell while it stays in effect, as he needs a slot open with the flight spell to grab the spoonful of sugar.
The water section is pretty brutal here too. For starters, just getting into the water will take a chunk off your life, because either you turn into a fish on land and get drained fast while you maneuver into the water, or you turn into the fish after falling into the water and getting drained on the way down, and you lose life for standing on the sand or dead grass or whatever it is before you pour the water in. And you can't swim diagonally downward. And the fish spell stays in your inventory, so you can only carry one other item at a time. Your one saving grace is that you can pick up a third item if it is going to combine with something you're carrying to form a spell. Also, you can pass through an octopus's head safely; it's only the tentacles that hurt you in this version. (On Commodore 64 it could be trickier as you can't STOP swimming diagonally downward.) You do get transformed back automatically once you escape--just remember to dump the fish spell somewhere and don't use it again. And finally, on the 128k Spectrum, the water makes the music all warbly.
