Snake Pass (Nintendo Switch) Review | 8-Bit Eric
8-Bit Eric reviews Snake Pass, on the Nintendo Switch. Snake pass is a retro theme classic 3d platform type of puzzle game.
You control a Snake called Noodle, and his friend a humming bird named Doodle accompanies you. Each level, you need to find the three gem stones that allow you to exit the level.
There really is not much to the story of this game, and it is rather short, 4 themed worlds, with 15 levels total.
Each level also has other items such as orbs and coins to collect for all you completionist that loved Banjo Kazooie and other collect-a-thon titles.
Controlling Noodle is actually like nothing else I had ever played before. To move forward you hold ZR, If you move the left joystick left and right your slack slithers faster.. this is kinda neat, however, I felt it didn’t work very well. If you hold A, you raise your head, and this allows you to go up steps, bamboo, and other obstacles, you move the head using the analog stick. ZL grips on whatever surface you are on, which is useful when grabbing onto bamboo vines and having to climb up them.
Sometimes the control can be a little tricky, especially because you need momentum to reach certain areas, and your tail can also fall behind you. But this doesn’t detract from the fun, it just adds to you needing to have the patience to try again.
Snake pass has a goofy Nintendo 64 era graphics vibe to it, and in my opinion it fits just right. Snake Pass runs on Unreal engine 4. There isn’t too much frame rate issues, just a tiny bit but I am not picky because the gameplay is here, and it doesn’t distract me away from it enough.
Majority of the charm of this game comes from music composed by David Wise who worked on other hits such as DK 64, and Star Fox Adventures, and the music totally makes Snake Pass feel like a classic rare game from those eras.
