Graceful Explosion Machine (Nintendo Switch) Review | 8-Bit Eric
This is a review of Graceful Machine Explosion by 8-Bit Eric for the Nintendo Switch, Graceful Machine Explosion is an arcade style shooter
There isn’t much of a story, no characters, nothing. This is simply a game about achieving the best score you can get possible in each level.
Players control a ship, which can be flipped 180 degrees to move around self-wrapping levels using the ZL and L buttons. The game honestly feels a lot like defender and other classic arcade shooters of that era.
The control is very solid, and simple. You just move your ship using the analog stick, and aim with your weapons.
The basic gun is the starting weapon, shooting forward in a straight line, it does overheat however. In addition to your gun you get four weapons, that are assigned to each of the four face buttons of the controller
The energy sword swings around the ship doing heavy damage to anything in its path while also being the only way to cancel enemy bullets
The next power-weapon is a missile barrage, which can either shoot out in all directions or be focused wherever you’d like, depending on whether you’re pointing the joystick or not when firing.
The final weapon is a sniper beam, which is a single overwhelming laser firing straight ahead that increases its damage output the longer it’s focused on an enemy.
Each of the for weapons depend on energy, and if your meter depletes you have to either cool down, or grab the gems from each enemy you destroy.
Each level is broken up into three waves of enemies, when you complete all three waves, you complete the level. If you get killed, you have an option start over from whatever wave you were left at.
The game features 36 regular stages across 4 different planets, which means this game is very short. However, as I mentioned this game is meant to be a score focused arcade style game.
The key to getting a high score is to keep building your score multiplier and not letting it drop.
One neat feature is that you have the option to upload your score to the online leader boards, but only right when you complete a level and you must be connected to the internet.
I think Graceful Explosion Machine’s cartoon visuals really stand out and look great thanks to the bright colours and basic geometric designs for enemies.
There are not too much variety in enemies, however, the frantic gameplay keeps this game a joy to play. It is simple yet effective.
