At 5 minutes and 55 seconds the album version of Snow Patrol’s “Run” was not originally planned as a single but after it was played on Radio 1 in full in late 2003, interest in the track and the band exploded. This surprise success prompted a single, 95 seconds shorter than the original, to be hastily recorded and released and almost immediately debuted on the UK chart eventually peaking at 5.

The success of Run prompted the re-release of the album’s (Final Straw) first single “Spitting Games” in July 2004. It had flown under the radar before then but performed well and along with “Chocolate” formed the basis for a massive boost in the band’s prospects.

On 7 December 2008, Leona Lewis’ cover of “Run” entered the UK Singles Chart at number 1 based on downloads alone. This was her 3rd number one.
