Bob Keeshan had created and then played Captain Kangaroo between 1955 and 1984, at the time it was the the longest-running nationally broadcast children's television program. He suffered a heart attack in the early 80s and underwent bypass surgery leading to his retirement from the show.

Fun Facts:

Bob Keeshan joined the Marines in 1945 and throughout his career and even in some of his obituaries he was labeled a “decorated combat veteran” who fought on the famous battlegrounds of Iwo Jima. Keeshan never saw combat and always corrected people but the idea stuck, probably because of the amusing juxtaposition of his grandfatherly television character with the murderous actions that took place on the Japanese held island.

Keeshan's grandson, Britton Keeshan, became the youngest person at that time to have climbed the Seven Summits by climbing Mount Everest in May 2004. He carried photographs of his grandfather on that ascent, and he buried a photo of the two of them at the summit

The song “Flowers on the Wall” by the Statler Brothers is about various boring activities used to pass time and mentions watching Captain Kangaroo. The 1975 version is used in the soundtrack to the 1994 film Pulp Fiction. In the film, Bruce Willis's character sings along to the line, "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" as he is driving.
