Somewhat hilariously given the current state of US Presidential Politics Howard Dean’s energetic, honest, off the cuff oratory style and antics (both on and off the stage) were labeled as being “unpresidential”.

Oh and Wits also called the Dean Scream “I Have A Scream” because it took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a reference to the slain Civil Rights leader’s inspirational speech.

At the time and since the News Media has taken some flak for elevating this story in the way they did and as Dean had been running an anti-establishment and anti-Iraq war campaign with an energized youthful grassroots movement behind it, many believed that at the very least it highlighted the media’s and the party’s bias against him.

Sounds like Bernie right?

While it probably didn’t help it must be noted that despite being the favorite he lost Iowa before the Scream and in many ways his campaign had become a victim of its own success: In receiving extra media scrutiny as the front runner his energetic but gaffe prone oratory style had already caused problems and his management team was already creaking under the weight of carrying out a national election effort based on enthusiastic but inexperienced, unconnected and often youthful supporters called Deaniacs and Deaniebabies

Also while Dean had blown his Democrat competition out of the water in polling 2003 he was never shown to be able to beat President Bush.

Dean would drop out in February 2004 only winning once, in Vermont, the state he governed between 1991 and 2003.

Despite this failure he had a lasting impact most notably he was credited with pushing the other Democrat Candidates into an Anti-Iraq war stance much earlier than they otherwise might have done.

And in 2005 Dean was elected the DNC chair and introduced a broad election campaign strategy and the internet fundraising to back it up that is partially credited with helping flip a number of States in Barack Obama’s favor in 2008.

Despite his disruptive anti-establishment run Dean endorsed Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election instead of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders from his home state in September 2015.
