Solar Assault Arcade
66In the year 6852, 12 years after the Third Bacterian War, a mobile planet-like fortress appears suddenly, moving toward planet Gradius. Oddly, the planets in the fortress' path vanished to nowhere - it seemed like the planets got warped into some hyperspace zone. Planet Gradius is in danger again. Alpinia, Vic Viper, and Lord British make a sally, flying toward the mysterious fortress.
This title retains most of the gameplay characteristics of its 2D counterparts including the same enemies, protagonists, the Power Meter system and familiar settings such as Power Capsules obtained by defeating enemies, but everything is done in 3D instead. The player takes control of one of three spaceships, battling enemies and bosses in settings like underground tunnels, planet surfaces, and space fields.
One change from previous Gradius games is that the player now has a health bar; the ship will not immediately destruct upon the slightest shot or collision.
The other major gameplay change is the ability to adjust the speed, which is necessary to time the avoidance of certain obstacles and enemies. Also, since the game is in 3D, two views are now at the player's disposal and can be switched anytime; one view closer to the screen and one a little farther.
There are three ships to choose from:
BP 592A Vic Viper
It has the same weapons as the original model, but it was created for high-speed interceptions.
LS-379G Lord British
The ship is named after the brave prince of Latis, who piloted the ship by himself and defeated the Salamander Army along with Vic Viper from planet Gradius. This wasn't changed in the Salamander anime, whereas many other background settings in the original video game got slightly changed in the anime trilogy.
WC-672H Alpinia In terms of appearance, Alpinia seems to combine traits from both previous ships, but with a black and orange color scheme.
The game is unique single player experience masterfully created by Konami, everyone should try it at least once in their life.
