I learned and cleared this game 2 or 3 years ago before I recorded and posted runs here. Clearing this today felt super nice because it was so easy...I remember first playing this on my modded SNES mini before I had a gaming PC or knew anything about input lag. I used a super crappy and cheap wireless controller with a stiff d-pad that had even more input lag on top of my jank set up. I remember dying on Stage 3 and looking up youtube clears of this game to see how far I'd gotten.

Now I cleared it today and ALMOST had a No Death, but alas I miserably screwed up my red bomb point blank timing technique for the mech on the last level and ended up dying and then dying again a bit later since I was underpowered. Oh well. Still a fairly clean run overall.

This game is fun and I really enjoyed cutting my teeth on this one when I was first getting into shmups. You can bomb the crap out of everything in this game, it's great.

The sprites look good, although in retrospect some of the backgrounds are a bit drab. By far the best part of this game is the OST. It reminds me a lot of the Mega Man X OST with it's high energy, upbeat synth sound. Top tier gaming music right here.

The weapons in this game are kind of interchangeable. Blue seems marginally stronger, but kind of has some big gaps. Green is more dense but maybe a tiny bit less strong. Red doesn't seem to have as good coverage as blue or green--BUT--it has the best bomb by far since it gives you a ton of invincibility and lets you point blank enemies with your ship for devastating damage that makes the bosses look like clowns. Green bomb is the worst since it's homing nature seems a tad random and you can't fire while it's in use. Blue bomb is squarely in the middle with a generic super beam.

Your default speed is adequate for the entire game except the last boss part where he has his shield up and blasts his white shot super fast.

Soldier Blade is easily my favorite of the Solider series and a very solid game on the legendary PC Engine/Turbografx-16. Don't miss this one. 8/10.
