Solstice is an isometric puzzle game that came out on the NES in 1990. As opposed to many NES games, Solstice was first made in England and later ported to Japan. The Japanese version I'm playing here is essentially the same as the English version, except for the final part of the game! When you reach the final tower of the game, the JP version offers up two extra potions as you enter. Then, in the room where the final staff piece normally appears in English, the Japanese version has a one-up hat! You have to jump up with the help of the skeletons to hit the switch, and then when you reach the secret room under the pyramid, that's where you find the final staff piece! It actually makes more sense IMO, since in English that room only contains useless items that are only there to let you get 100%.

This is a 100% playthrough of the game, but I AM using the "infinite lives" cheat and I'm using a guide to go through all the rooms. This is not a game you want to play without a guide. Some secrets are extremely cryptic to find, and if you don't make your own map while you're playing, you're guaranteed to get lost! It's also this weird mix of skills (with mid-air jumps and such) and puzzles, which usually doesn't appeal to a lot of people. Well, I'm glad I finally played through this cruel classic!

BTW, the sequel, Solstice II (or Equinox in English), that came out for the SNES, was on the other hand made in Japan first and is apparently just as brutal (if not more so!) than this one!
