Sandopolis has some routes that both Tails and Knuckles can get through. There are a couple routes in Act 1 that only Tails can take, and there are routes in Act 2 that only Knuckles can take.

From all of this, it's almost like Sonic got screwed over by this zone big time. At least both acts are still very wide enough for him, anyway.

The reason Knuckles' Act 2 of this zone starts with the ghosts already released is because, again, Knuckles' adventure takes place after the adventure of Sonic and/or Tails, and when they were here, they released the ghosts first.

If I took the main route, Knuckles would come across the Egg Capsule they were housed in already open. The different route I took at the start was probably the longest path towards a Special Stage ring in the whole game, as you'll find it on the way through this alternate route 100% guaranteed. According to a beta version of this game that I played, this Big Ring's location was originally put at a dead end in roughly the same place before a push switch that would open up a path that would let Knuckles continue his way through the level.

In short, the switch was there to make you use it and trick you to not try and discover the Big Ring that lied beyond it.

Act 2's boss is just a bit faster than Sonic's version. Not much of a change, really, but know that this is the last normal boss Knuckles will get to enjoy, with Sandopolis being the last regular zone Knuckles will go through in its entirety.

Knuckles gets into Lava Reef through a passageway. He was probably the one to make the trap that Sonic & Tails fell into to make up for not showing up during Flying Battery and Sandpolis while they were there.
