Two fighter jets scrambled to intercept an unresponsive aircraft, which resulted in a sonic boom that reverberated across Washington on Sunday. The F-16 fighter jets "acted on an unresponsive Cessna 560 Citation V aircraft over Washington, DC, and northern Virginia," according to an announcement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Locals may have noticed a sonic boom as a result of the NORAD aircraft's ability to fly at supersonic speeds. In an effort to get the pilot's attention, they also employed flares.
