On October 18th, 2001, F-14 Tomcats launched from the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt, completed their strike mission near Kabul, Afghanistan, and then accelerated toward the tanker, but Tanker had an engine fire and was leaving, and there were no other tankers available! Low on fuel, the F-14s put their emergency divert field in Pakistan. A PAF base near Jacobabad city, had been home to the Pakistan Air Force F-16s at one time, which is why it was considered a good divert for US fighters. As the F-14s landed at the Pakistani base, pilots were hesitant to shut down the engines for fear they would not be able to find the right piece of gear to start us back up as the Tomcat didn't have self start capacity. They finally had no choice but to shut down and land. Base Commander invited the Tomcat ranking officer for a cup of tea in his office, where he spent the next two hours discussing everything from military aviation to family histories. The US pilot said, "The general was pretty good at English." In the end, the General said good luck, and Tomcats flew back to carrier after getting fuel and correct support gear to start the engines.
