In the 2011 version of this game, going as fast as possible when racing Metal Sonic doesn’t result in faster times due to Eggman’s behavior regarding when he appears at the door at the end of the level. I don’t know the technical details, but after playing the level and seeing what it does, the idea is this: Eggman appears at the door after a certain amount of time passes once you reach the end. After a certain point (completing the race under a certain amount of time), Eggman doesn’t appear in the same amount of time correlating to how fast you completed the race. The faster you get to the door, the longer you have to wait. This means that you are restricted to completing the whole level in a relatively specific amount of time, where the gameplay before and after the race is what makes the difference for a record. In short, going as fast as possible in the race doesn't make your record better.

This was a very good run. I wanted to get a really fast time for this level ever since I started time attacking this game, but it didn’t happen until today. I exited the stage at 10 seconds flat prior to this run’s start, so the timer bug doesn’t apply here. I believe that the gameplay at the end was a tiny bit slow because I could’ve started the jumping sequence to destroy the flower capsule earlier. Otherwise, the execution was great. I’ll go for the 1st place record sometime.
