After the blue spheres special stage has been beaten enough times 'Debug mode' will be unlocked. Turn it on in Mania Mode's 'Game Options' then in the game press Square (on Playstation) to turn Sonic into a ring, which will allow him to move through obstacles and enemies around the level using the directional buttons or left stick. This can allow fast access to boss battles.

Pressing Square will switch Sonic between his normal form and debug mode. Pressing X (on Playstation) while in debug mode will cycle through a range of objects and enemies, Circle will cycle through item box types, and Triangle will place the currently selected object.

Game Options can also be used to change Sonic's special move to Sonic 3 (& Knuckles)'s Insta-Shield, performed by pressing jump when Sonic is in the air, and can have Knuckles replace Tails alongside Sonic.
