A bit late on this but I've been meaning to try out the PC remake of 06 for a while now. Anybody who has been with me for a while now should know I have played A LOT of Sonic 06 and that I've grown to like it from how much I've played it. Many people seem to be under the impression that this is either an emulated PC port or just a straight remake with better graphics and load times. That is not the case, this is the full remake using the original game's assets but with the intention of fixing the gameplay. This is everything I personally noticed from playing.
- Sonic has weight to his movement so has to actually accelerate and he has a proper turning arc when moving fast, no more turning on a dime. This weight also applies to the snowboard which gets faster as you go downhill or swerve between 2 ramps.
- You can actually control Sonic’s jump speed. Sonic no longer locks into one speed in the air and can build up speed or slow down, even when jumping at a standstill. Sonic also maintains momentum when you jump so he can jump far at high speeds.
- Sonic is properly controllable in the mach section, his turns are sharper and easier to control and you can influence his direction when jumping. Sonic also maintains speed easier allowing you to properly control yourself without losing most of your speed. It also seems like many objects don't actually damage you now, only objects made of metal.
- Sonic's basic jump can damage enemies and his homing attack now arcs downwards instead of defying gravity. Sonic can also properly switch between rails like the DC/GC games.
- Many things missing from the final game return such as Sonic's alternate homing attack animation only used for the white gem in the final game, his full wall jump animation and many missing events and voice lines. Sonic's seldom used "full speed" run from the mach sections is also now used in high speed scripted sections instead of his basic run. There are also multiple combo bonuses instead of just the one used the original game.
There are quite a few problems however...
- The physics of the snowboard need some serious reworking. Sonic is way too influenced by the physics making it feel like you have very little control. Sonic really needs a speed up because you can get easily stuck in places unable to build enough speed. Sonic also needs a brake because the physics sometimes cause Sonic to become too fast and you just go flying out of control. This is really noticeable after the curved half pipe.
- Rainbow Rings need to be lowered a bit. Now that Sonic's homing attack has gravity, it feels like the rainbow rings are too high and I have to really try and hit them.
- The homing attack is still slow and it doesn't lock on immediately. You have to wait between every hit otherwise the homing attack won't lock on to the next enemy and you will go flying forward.
- Rail switching, Lightspeed, Slide and Spin Kick should have their own buttons. They conflict too much with other things and the new controls for the Slide make the kick and Spin Dash too hard to use.
- Many automated sections need reworking. Some of them are way too slow, the Slide at 2:03 was specifically because this section is so slow. Some automated sections don't go the whole distance, at 2:12 the automation ends early and will send you flying off the stage if your not holding up. That's why I slammed into the wall trying to keep myself from going to the right.
