Sony ZV1 lens distortion cropping barrelling soft edge focus between RAW JPG and video recording
In this video I'm showing an issue with the Sony ZV-1 where it goes soft on focus at the edges of the frame.
To show what is causing this issue I have to look at the RAW mode of the camera which shows us a distorted image that's full of barrelling and lens geometry issues. This lens distortion or barrelling is actually deliberate on Sony's part as it is compressing the light that enters the lens and so therefore compresses the image. This compressed image is then decompressed or stretched and unstretched in the camera.
This process of squeezing the image and doing this whole compression and decompression is so that the ZV1 can get a wider image and more light entering the camera on to the sensor. The process is a little bit like the anamorphic lens process where a particular ratio of vertical stretching or compression is applied to the light and image passing through the anamorphic lens which is then later decompressed or squeezed by the same ratio to give a geometrically correct image that has a wider angle or FOV.
This whole processing of the RAW image in the ZV-1 may also explain why when at its widest the lens does not appear to be the equivalent of 24mm on full frame.
The effect of softening at the edges also looks a bit like a vignette and the blurring could also be something akin to chromatic aberration or another aberration caused by the lens.
Regardless of the cause be it the lens, the in camera picture processing, the geometry processing etc. there is obviously a side effect to how Sony are compressing and decompressing the images and therefore the video on the ZV-1.
