In the 90s, games were developed in ways to exploit the hardware of the time. Artists would use certain pixel patterns which would become blurred in old CRTs. This blur effect would mix colors on this patterns to create transparencies and add extra intermediate colors to the game, much needed to overcome the hardware palette limits.

I developed a filter for Streets of Rage 2 New Era that applies this composite effect from old CRT monitors only to this pixel patterns. The filter is not perfect and still blurs some parts that weren't meant to be blurred, but overall I'm happy with the result.

Note: The final version of the filter doesn't cause as much blur as seen in this video. It is still interesting to see the effects of this earlier version of the filter.
