Being aware of the backdrop means being aware of what, if you miss, you will be shooting into. A sad fact is that a lot of bullets just don't hit what they're aimed at, and you can never guarantee a hit, so it's always good to note if, say, the fence you're aiming at is bulletproof so that you don't accidentally kill one of your neighbors.
