Let's Play: Skyrim - Episode 102: Aether
Back in the ancient days, before science, back when it was still called philosophy and no one did any experiments, people came up with the idea of Aether. They didn't know that the Earth and the planets were surrounded by vacuum; they just knew that it didn't distort the same way water or air did, but couldn't imagine nothingness. So it was a magical substance full of strange properties.
Making something out of Aether, then, is fit only for gods. Seems appropriate that the Dwemer might think themselves worthy of the feat.
