Space Quest 0 - Part 2: If Only This Were Black Mesa
Nathaniel plays and talks his way through Space Quest 0: Replicated, a fan-made PC prequel to the Space Quest series of comedic adventure games. Part 2 of 8.
In this part, protagonist Roger Wilco gets a second chance at disabling the computer virus that was responsible for blowing up his escape pod in the previous video. After removing the offending virus disk from the pod's disk drive, Roger celebrates his newfound safety by crashing the pod into the planet Labion.
The pod lands in an underground lake, which necessitates a quick retrieval of the pod's emergency supply kit. Roger makes immediate use of a rebreather mask, which is the last act of self-preservation he is able to achieve for the next several minutes, as the local flora proceed to ensnare him. Fatally. A lot.
Roger is able to navigate through the tangle of deadly plants with the assistance of judicious video editing, and he takes a moment to thoughtfully reflect on the situation once he reaches dry land. Thoughtful reflection gives way to inept bungling in the jungle as Roger tries to solve puzzles that don't exist, all the while completely botching the puzzles that are right in front of him. A tragic picnic ensues.
Later on, our "hero" stumbles into the hut of an alien who, by virtue of being an alien in a hut, is probably going to grab Roger and throw him into a boiling stew pot. History will show that Roger's actions here were justified.
After a moderately productive fumble through the alien's belongings, Roger acquires a bottle of glue and reads through some helpful documents foreshadowing a few ways he'll be dying in later videos. Outside, pulling out the rope he grabbed from the emergency supply kit, Roger tries to turn both his crowbar and a plank he found leaning against the hut into a makeshift grappling hook. The results are exactly as successful as you'd expect.
Marching back into the forest/jungle/whatever, Roger encounters a talking nightmare tree that demands he return the branch he just snapped off. The kindly janitor quickly complies, and is rewarded with a valuable chunk of amber that he will unceremoniously unload on an unsuspecting shopkeeper at some point in the future. Having finally run out of things to do on this screen, Roger makes his way to the set of Legends of the Hidden Temple, where our video ends.
