Space Raiders/Space Invaders: Invasion Day PS2 playthrough Part 01 Justin
Several days ago I visited my favorite store with old stuff (furniture, antiques) - it has a wonderful game corner with many games for different consoles. I was browsing through the PS2 shelves when one title drew my attention: Space Invaders: Invasion Day. I looked at the back cover: nice graphics, a third-person view, real human models? Wait, that can't be an Invaders game, right? - I thought to myself, but then I noticed "Taito" at the bottom of the box. The game was around 3 bucks, so I bought it without any hesitation. And it appeared that I found, by complete coincidence, a game I did not know of but one that is considered to be the infamous reboot of the series.
Well, here is my playthrough of the game with the first of three characters - Justin. From my initial experience I can point out the following:
- it is a nice casual game (a difficult one but still casual, no actual game over, just a score reset);
- the somewhat 3D isometric view from behind the character does not translate well to the type of gameplay reserved for 2D space shooters. Bullet hell elements are simply incomprehensible because of the camera angles, it is hard to notice some of the projectiles, some enemies hit you while you can't see them (they are off the screen);
- the story is very basic, just an excuse to put some cutscenes and monologues/dialogues in the game;
- all in all the game might be very tedious to some people, but for me: it is a great title to use it as a break from long and complex games like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts. If you manage to find it at a low price, this can be a nice addition to your collection.
I will continue playing the game with two other characters just to check whether there are any unlockables and to improve my score.
