Spacewar! The First Indie Game Ever Made ~ (Retro Weekend)
In the history of video games, Spacewar! stands out as the very first indie game, marking the beginning of a movement characterized by innovation and passion.
In the early 1960s, MIT housed brilliant minds including Steve Russell, Martin Graetz, and Wayne Wiitanen. These students, members of the Tech Model Railroad Club, which specialized in complex train sets with advanced control systems, conceived Spacewar! in this creative environment. The game was originally developed to run on the PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor-1) computer, created by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1961.
Spacewar! was a two-player game where each player controlled a spaceship, aiming to destroy the other with missiles. Set against a starfield backdrop, the game included the gravitational pull of a central star, adding gameplay complexity. It was developed on the PDP-1 computer, a cutting-edge machine at the time, allowing real-time gameplay.
