We all know Battlefield and Call Of Duty, right? Everyone has played one of those best-selling titles.
And if we said Spec Ops: The Line? Some would answer that it's still a war game, it's still a third-person shooter like so many others. And he would probably be partly right: the gameplay and the game mechanisms are very reminiscent of Gears Of War and a minimum of team commands make it seem slightly tactical, but the damage thresholds are apparently more realistic than COD or Battlefield.
However, we at MALE Games have always paid a lot of attention especially to the stories of video games, and this one is definitely a punch in the stomach.
The game opens in Blockbuster style, with explosions, cuts to black and flashbacks to understand how we got to that destroyed and half-covered Dubai. Captain Walker, our character, is an honorable war hero convinced that he always makes the right choices. Yet, the more complicated the situation becomes, the more his two soldiers begin to doubt him.
The entire campaign is hallucinogenic, twisted and dizzying; it really feels like you've been under the scorching Dubai sun for hours and you just want to sit in the shade and drink. Maybe also because of (or thanks to) the good but slightly "blurry" graphics. The story highlights the drama and futility of wars.
The ending wakes you up and opens your eyes: after having been through everything and finally believing you could kill the enemy, there is a twist!
After 4/5 hours of hell you find yourself thinking about what you have missed since the beginning of the game and if there really could have been details that you did not notice. And so, after drinking a nice glass of water and refreshing yourself, you start again because you realized that you had misjudged a book (or a DVD in this case) by its cover!
Dubai is recreated in a fantastic way with breathtaking details considering that the game came out way back in 2012! The external and internal brightness is managed very well, especially together with the sand: sometimes you can exploit the latter accumulated behind the windows to eliminate the enemies below!
Ultimately, Spec Ops: The Line is like a meteor in the sky of shooters, with some small flaws, such as the poor multiplayer and the impossibility of choosing whether to play in first or third person, but also many merits, a story full of surprises and some very spectacular ideas!
With the big names in the category it is never easy to compete but this game, despite not having become very popular, has not gone unnoticed!
