Speed Crew - Game Review

Hello, Veteran Gamers! Today, we're revving up our engines and diving into the fast-paced, cooperative world of 'Speed Crew'. Picture this - 'Overcooked', but with cars. It's a delightful blend of chaos and camaraderie, perfect for your next game night with friends, whether they're sat right next to you or tuning in online.

In 'Speed Crew', you'll step into the shoes of a team of race car mechanics, set to become the best pit stop crew, starting from the year 1977. Now, don't worry about your virtual aging process; these characters are mysteriously timeless. Led by a quirky, elder mentor whose comical antics and bold claims become a running gag throughout the game, 'Speed Crew' promises light-hearted entertainment with its amusing storyline.

The game's graphic style is accessible and friendly, featuring comic-like 3D visuals that suit all audiences. Each level is set within a different decade, and the attention to detail in the changing car designs is definitely a charming touch. The music, while not particularly memorable, provides a lively backdrop, capturing the spirit of a race track.

The game's objective? Repair as many cars as possible within the time limit. The gameplay rhythm is akin to that of Overcooked, with cars lining up and problems being identified, fixed, and then sent on their way. Time management is key - complete repairs quickly to rack up combo points and avoid penalties for slow service. The gold cup reward deviates from the usual 3-star system, making for a refreshing change.

' Speed Crew' keeps you on your toes by gradually introducing new tasks and randomly generating car issues, forcing you to adapt on the fly. And trust me, the challenges don't stop at mechanics - you'll also need to dodge racing cars, extinguish fires, and even avoid the occasional lava pit!

I invited my wife and best friend to join the 'Speed Crew' journey, and we quickly found our groove, assigning roles and dealing with the occasional stress. Rest assured, our friendships survived the madness! The difficulty level is well balanced, with a welcome challenge in achieving gold but a fair threshold for progression with bronze.

The control scheme is straightforward, with a pickup, user, and even a 'slap' button for some added fun. However, we did encounter minor issues, like the difficulty in picking up the right items due to their small size and similar appearance. It was also challenging to identify specific problems with the cars when their highlighted issues blended with their body color. These were more noticeable in TV mode and exacerbated in portable mode. We also observed that the methods to fix certain issues changed frequently and without warning. Nevertheless, these minor hiccups didn't dampen our overall enjoyment.

We tested 'Speed Crew' in both local and online co-op modes and even combined the two, inviting a friend overseas to join our local game - a feature that worked smoothly. However, playing solo felt a bit lacking due to the absence of AI assistance, so we'd recommend keeping it as a multiplayer experience.

With four main campaigns and a couple of unlockable bonus levels, 'Speed Crew' provided us with several nights of fun-filled gaming. An 'Arcade Mode' is hinted to be on the way, which promises to add even more replay value post-launch.

All in all, 'Speed Crew' is a worthy addition to your co-op gaming repertoire. Despite a few minor issues, such as small on-screen items and occasional difficulty identifying car problems, it delivers a fantastic, addictive multiplayer experience. So, buckle up, Veteran Gamers, and get ready for a fun, fast-paced ride in 'Speed Crew'!

Catch you in the next review, folks. Until then, keep your engines revving and game on!
