Spider-man PS1/PSX Playthrough Part 1
And so here's my long overdue run of Spider-Man from 2001 for the Playstation. I still remember seeing the commercial for the game and renting it from Blockbuster not long afterwards, and having such a blast with it I got it for my birthday later that year. It's a unique game where the difficulty choice heavily impacts gameplay. Where "Easy" is a mild step above "kid mode" in terms of playability. It made some segments automatic while kid mode flat out skipped portions.
Anyway. The game starts out with a somewhat lengthy FMV before we finally get into gameplay. I will say I somewhat prefer the more structured stage by stage level design. As odd as it may seem, having "designated play sets" for stages helps for a more structured narrative type game for Spider-Man, meaning we only go to buildings that are important and with stuff to do, vs swinging around with not much to do for some stints. Also means more unique set pieces a bit.
The bank robbery is a nice ease into the action set of levels, they're quick and to the point while giving you as many ways you can to get familiar with the controls. After that though, we have one heck of a "Do not stop!" gameplay. Having to rush to the Daily Bugle in order to save Jameson. And the Scorpion boss I hesitate to say is "easy" since he can pummel you easily and is sorta an "equal" to you in this fight, which reflects his purpose in creation so that's accurate.
But wow, a gimmick boss fight off the bat where he wants to kill Jameson more than fight you. He only ever chases you after you've it him and only stops till he hits you. The trick is to technically get him where he won't retaliate as fast but anyway.
After that we enter the first major stint of the game, fleeing from the cops which is "long" in how many segments are to it. But even with a new boss fight on the horizon, we aren't done moving at high speeds yet. But the game sure has a good sense of story progression and structure. Also can you believe this Spidey's VA not only did Kyle Katarn, but also Batman? That's a heck of a resume, and good ol Jennifer Hale giving us a stellar Black Cat, whom has or lacks a mask depending on the version. PC and Dreamcast she looks how she should. But the PS1 version is the most polished to play.
