Generally I consider the 1982 the end of the first generation of computer gaming. Spitfire Ace is a great example of why. This was considered a good game back then, not fantastic but good. There weren't many of its kind (Flight Simulator supported a dogfight mode), and this had many of a concept that can be considered standard. However there is basically no terrain, which is disappointing when Flight Simulator had that. Morever there is very minimal sense of motion, even if in theory the frame rate is higher compared to a truly 3 dimensional flight simulator. There are multiple levels, but in reality there is not much difference between them. But this was still good for 1982, and that's why I consider 1982 as the last year of the fundational era of computer games.
