Spitfire Audio: Westworld Scoring Competition - Entry by Psamathes #westworldscoringcompetition2020
Here's my entry for the Spitfire Audio Westworld Scoring Competition 2020! This is the first time I do something like this, and it's definitely my biggest original project yet.
The first section of the score is a track with folk and electronica influences, which is what I usually implement in my own original material. I tried to find a fitting rhythm and mood and then wrote the vocals and the rest of the song around it. The lyrics on the entire score are in my own made-up language (jokingly called "Psamathese"). The aim of the language is to blend the phonetics of different languages, from Italian and Latin to Swedish, Japanese and beyond, and then leave the interpretation up to the individual listener. It doesn't have a literal translation, its effect is based on feelings and sounds. The folk improvisation in the last verse breaks the pace and also escalates the atmosphere right before the big switch, which it also facilitates. Overall this started from asking myself what I'd expect to hear in a scene like this, and then adding my own spin to it.
For the other section I had an entirely different approach. I started by improvising melody and lyrics along with the video itself, trying to emphasize and accompany the events. Then I built my signature one-woman choir around it. When the staccato choir leads into the second half of this section, I started by finding the chase rhythm on percussions, putting the most fitting BPM to it, and then once again building vocals around it. In this case I went through the scene to drop a few vocal ideas here and there, for example the menacing, powerful vocals (a recurring element) when the second car comes out of the flames. There is once again a slight "fantasy" element to the score, which is part of my own style and I guess says a lot about my love and experience with videogame music.
The project uses lots of LABS, some instruments from the BBCSO Discover, and a few others (from cheap to free). All vocals and choir parts were performed by me, and even though all in all it was a huge amount of work, I enjoyed every second of it, and I learnt a lot about many different aspects of music production.
