Spooktober '22 | GeGeGe no Kitarō: Gyakushuu! Yōkai Dai Kessen - Playthrough
Boy this was a rough one. We're back with our boy Kitaro, this time on the 32 bit PS1 as we play GeGeGe no Kitarō: Gyakushuu! Yōkai Dai Kessen. Published by Konami but developed by the same devs as the snes game we looked at previously. Gyakushuu follows in its predecessor's footsteps by mostly focusing on boss encounters. There are still some small stages and Kitaro may even had to traverse them a few times as he fulfills requests.
So right off the back, this game is a real looker. Being a super late PS1 game (2003 wowie) it has incredible art and sound design. Kitaro also has lots of his trademark powers such as electrification and the remote control geta. Sadly this one doesn't play well. At all. Something about the controls feel incredibly laggy. Kitaro has strange air momentum and doesn't act with any urgency. It felt so bad I had to change controllers and then check my capture chain to see if something was up. Later I played it a bit on CRT and it was just how the game is. Sadly the gameplay combined with the gauntlet of a final stage kept me from enjoying this one. Which is a shame cause look how damn cool it looks!
